Innovation 101 – Ecere Corporation

The importance of loving what you do

Being an entrepreneur isn’t something you necessarily learn in school. Of course, training helps improving your knowledge and your skills, but the key element is to love what you do. This is precisely what characterizes Jérôme Jacovella-St-Louis, founder of Ecere Corporation, a company that offers a wide range of complementary software.

Background

A video games enthusiast since high school, Jérôme dreamed of making the most of his passion and creating his own game. He therefore got on with the task and, in a self-taught manner, acquired the necessary knowledge to carry out his project. Its objective was to create a game that could be adapted to different platforms (Linux, Windows and MS-DOS) without having to be reprogrammed. While today we have mobile applications that adapt to Android or IOS, in 1997, cross-platform applications were in their early stages. It was during this period that Jérôme created Ecere, a cross-platform software development kit (SDK).

Always evolving

The Ecere SDK, a free and open source software that allows video game development, is the first product of a wide range of software developed by Jérôme and his team. Enthusiastic about his project, and with the knowledge acquired during his self-study, Jérôme turned his attention to the development of a cross-platform graphical user interface (GUI) kit and the 2D and 3D game engines, not to mention the creation of the eC programming language.

Ecere demonstrates that it is not necessary to focus on a single winning product. It is better to always continue your progress and innovate by following your interests. As Jérôme says, his products are like pieces of puzzles that fit together and complete each other. Thanks to his passion for his field, Jérôme has been led to design many complementary software. Ecere’s latest product is a geospatial visualization system: the GNOSIS SDK. This intuitive object-oriented software development kit is designed for geospatial information systems.

The team recently started a mixed reality project, a fusion between virtual and augmented reality. Equipped with a virtual reality headset, the user will be asked to interact with his environment through the application, much like Pokémon GO.

Today

Ecere now offers users a range of software products to meet their needs in multiplatform development, 3D visualization, geolocalization, archiving and broadcasting of geospatial data for online mapping, and graphical user interface, among others. It goes without saying that the Ecere team works tirelessly to improve itself by exploring the various possibilities of their field.

Jérôme’s advice

You have to follow your interests and be persistent. If you believe that a project will succeed, don’t be afraid to put in the effort and never stop until it works.

Ecere proves that entrepreneurship can take different paths. While some focus on a single product, others explore all the possibilities available to them. In short, the important thing is to love what you do.
